Yoon Kye Sang (The Outlaws) and Yu Hae Jin (A Taxi Driver) risk their lives to preserve the Korean language in the period drama Mal-Mo-E: The Secret Mission! Based on real-life events and figures, Mal-Mo-E: The Secret Mission is about a group of scholars who covertly gathered to create a Korean dictionary in the 1940s during the Japanese occupation. A Taxi Driver screenwriter Eom Yoo Na makes her directorial debut with the historical movie, which also co-stars Kim Hong Pa (Inside Men), Woo Hyun (Detective K: Secret of the Living Dead), Kim Tae Hoon (Love+Sling), Kim Sun Young (Miss Baek) and Min Jin Woong (Anarchist from Colony).
During the Japanese occupation in the early 1940s, Koreans were banned from speaking and teaching their own language in schools. Korean Language Society representative Ryu Jung Hwan (Yoon Kye Sang) leads his society members to secretly collect vocabulary and dialects in order to publish a Korean language dictionary. Illiterate Kim Pan Soo (Yu Hae Jin) joins the society by chance and realizes his love for the language after learning it. Together, Pan Soo and the scholars risk their lives to save the Korean language from extinction.
